UK: 'Herbal Suffragette' dies peacfully
Grampian TV Online
Monday 06 Sep 2004 An Orkney multiple sclerosis sufferer, who fought a legal battle to use cannabis to relieve her symptoms, has died at her home on South Ronaldsay. Fifty-six year old Biz Ivol campaigned vigorously for the drug to be legalised and was taken to court last year before charges were dropped. Biz Ivol openly used cannabis to help ease the pain of Multiple Sclerosis and campaigned for the drug to be legalised. She said her life had been made unbearable by the ravages of the disease. Now her fight is over, last week the fifty-six year old was struck down with a chest infection but she refused any medical treatment. It's understood she fell into a coma on Friday and died peacefully at her South Ronaldsay home yesterday. Her fight for legalisation of the drug hit the headlines last year when she faced charges of possessing, producing and supplying cannabis. Biz admitted distributing the drug in the form of chocolates for pain relief but pleaded not guilty to supplying. The case was dropped due to her ill-health. After the case collapsed, Biz then took the overdose she always vowed she would, to end what she called her pitiful existence. But she survived. Despite her failing health in recent months, she continued to fight vigorously for the drug to be legalised on medical grounds. Biz may now have lost her fight for life but her campaign will live on as supporters, who described her as the Herbal Suffragette, will continue to battle for the change in the law that she'd always hoped for.
