UK: Cannabis kids,14, kicked out of school
Rob Fairburn Sunday Mail, Glasgow
Saturday 16 Oct 2004 FOUR 14-year-olds have been suspended from school after being caught with cannabis. The rector of Peebles High has written to all parents of the school's 1500 pupils informing them of the punishment. John Brown said the school's reputation was best protected by facing the issue instead of sweeping it under the carpet. His letter stated: 'Four of our S3 pupils were found in possession of illegal drugs in school last week. 'The pupils have been suspended and as part of the re-admission conditions each pupil will be required to undertake a programme of drugs awareness counselling. 'It is important all parents remain vigilant and are able to recognise the effect of illegal drugs and substances.' One parent said: 'Normally these things are hushed up so it was a bit of a surprise to get the letter. But naturally parents get worried when they hear about these things so it is good to see the school reacting in a positive manner.' The pupils had been using cannabis close to the school and were confronted by staff.
