UK: Law change cuts costs for Met
Alan Travis The Guardian
Tuesday 23 Nov 2004 The number of people arrested for possession of cannabis has halved in London since the drugs law was relaxed in January, the Metropolitan police said yesterday. But the first official police evaluation of the impact of the reclassification of cannabis says the overall number of people dealt with by the police for possession has risen by a third, as more officers issue formal warnings on the streets rather than take offenders to the station. The report says many teenagers wrongly believe the change in the law means they are entitled to smoke cannabis openly, but it adds that more than UKP423,000 has been saved in police time. The report says 8,148 people were dealt with for possessing cannabis between April and August, compared with 6,231 in the same period last year.
