NL: Nederland ISD Approves Random Drug Testing

KBTV4 Online, NL

Thursday 16 Dec 2004

---

When Nederland students go back to school next fall, they could be
subjected to random drug testing.

The school board approved a random drug testing policy, presented Thursday
night by the assistant superintendent of curriculum, Mike Guidry.

The policy will affect students in grades seven through 12 who are involved
in extra-curricular activities. The policy will also affect student drivers.

Under the punishment section, first time offenders will be suspended from
extra-curricular activities for 30 academic days.

Offenders will also be required to participate in follow-up drug testing
and chemical abuse counseling.

School board officials say recent drug offenses in Nederland are linked to
prescription drugs, which are more difficult to detect.

Guidry says random drug testing will address that particular problem.
