Belgium: Cannabis laws turn over a new judicial leaf
Expatica.com
Thursday 13 Jan 2005 BRUSSELS - A new 'simplified' law on the possession and selling of cannabis in Belgium is to enter into force on 1 February. Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx has promised the new law will be "clearer" than the current legislation, which dates from 1998 and theoretically decriminalised cannabis possession for personal use. It aims to clarify the rules on the trading in soft drugs as the first law was criticised for being too complicated. Despite current legislation, those who keep cannabis for personal use have still found themselves vulnerable to prosecution. A meeting with expert lawyers to discuss the changes has been scheduled for 20 January.
