UK: Three In Every 20 Teenagers 'Have Tried Cannabis'
The Hexham Courant
Friday 21 Jan 2005 FIFTEEN per cent of 13 to 15-year-olds in Ponteland and the rest of Castle Morpeth borough have used cannabis, according to a new survey. More than 750 youngsters took part in a survey commissioned by Castle Morpeth Borough Council to help it target services for young people. The youngsters responded anonymously to the surveys, which were filled in at schools. It revealed that 28 per cent of children aged between 13 and 15 said that they smoked but more than 60 per cent thought it should be banned in public places. It also showed that 15 per cent of the age group said they had used cannabis and that 10 per cent were regular drinkers (more than once a week). Nearly one in ten of the smokers aged 13 to 15 said their parents bought their cigarettes, while four per cent said they took drugs with their parents. More than a fifth of youngsters aged 13 to 15 said they had consumed five or more glasses or bottles at their last drinking session, raising the potential issue of binge drinking. But in their free time 25 per cent preferred to read a book, 33 per cent did school work, 74 per cent went shopping, 72 per cent watched TV/DVD/video and six in ten spent time on their computer playing games or surfing the net, while 70 per cent listened to music. Some of the findings were more surprising than others. More than a third said they ate chips from between three and seven days a week. But 40 per cent said they ate vegetables every day and more than half ate fruit daily. The information will be used by the council and partner agencies it works with to improve facilities for young people, target educational work and inform general policy development.
