UK: School's Dealer Is Locked Up

Daily Record, Glasgow

Saturday 29 Jan 2005

---

A Sheriff yesterday blasted cannabis laws as he locked up a dealer for
selling the drug to classmates.

Craig Meldrum, 16, looked stunned as he was sent to a young offenders'
institution for two months.

He was just 15 when he sold pot to fellow pupils at Aberdeenshire's
Ellon Academy between October 2003 and March 2004.

At Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday, he admitted dealing the
drug.

Sheriff Douglas Cusine accused the Government of causing confusion by
deciding to decriminalise cannabis from Class B to Class C a year ago.

But possession remains a criminal offence, despite many people
carrying pot for personal use being let off with an informal warning.

Sheriff Cusine said: 'I myself have some difficulty in understanding
exactly what message it was the Government intended to convey.

'But supplying cannabis is a serious matter, particularly when the
target is school pupils.'
