UK: Cannabis inquiry at public school

BBC Online

Saturday 12 Feb 2005

---

A top public school in North Yorkshire has suspended 21 pupils amid an
investigation into cannabis use, it has been revealed.

Ampleforth College, near Thirsk, sent the boys home last Monday after drug
use at the school came to light.

Headteacher Father Gabriel Everitt said a "rigorous" inquiry was under way
into the "breach of discipline".

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said allegations had been made and the
force was also investigating the incident.

The ukp20,520-a-year school, whose former pupils include the late Cardinal
Basil Hume, aims to give pupils a Roman Catholic education.

'Vastly powerful'

In a statement, Father Everitt said: "Some may regard cannabis as a soft
drug, widely tolerated for recreational use by much of society.

"That is not the view here.

"It can be vastly more powerful than what was available a generation ago.
Our attitude is uncompromising.

"We regard any form of drug taking as a very serious breach of discipline,
and we are conducting a rigorous investigation into all the circumstances
of this discovery."

Counselling will be offered to those involved and random drug tests on
pupils will be carried out once the suspension period is served.
