UK: Cannabis use 'contributed to man's death'

A cannabis smoker may have died at his home because of an acute allergic
reaction to the drug, an inquest heard today.

Brian Humphries, from Market Harborough, Leicestershire, collapsed while
watching TV on March 30, last year.

A post-mortem examination found the 50-year-old's primary cause of death
was his severe asthma and lung disease.

But Dr Catherine Richards told the inquest at Leicester Town Hall that his
heavy use of cannabis was a "contributing factor".

The drug can cause anaphylactic shock when ingested, said the pathologist,
but has also been linked to allergic reactions when inhaled.

It was probably the combination of the drug use and his illnesses that led
to the death of Mr Humphries, she added.

During the hearing, relatives of Mr Humphries said he had reduced his use
of cannabis in the months before his death but added that he had been "in
agony" because of his other medical conditions.

Coroner Martin Symington said: "It (the cannabis use) does change the cause
of death from natural to a non-natural cause of death. I cannot return a
verdict of death by natural causes and therefore the only verdict I can
return is death by misadventure."
